I Put A Spell On You – Shane MacGowan & Friends

Friday, February 26th, 2010

The mighty Shane MacGowan has got together with some fine artists to produce a charity track where all proceeds are to go to the charity Concern.

Moved by the plight of the people of Haiti Shane and his girlfriend, Victoria Clarke made calls to their friends and got together with them to produce this fine rendition of classic Rock and Roll song.

Shane MacGowan’s distinct vocal style blends seamlessly into Paloma Faith’s and is then bolstered by Eliza Doolittle.  Nick Cave provides a giant vocal performance alongside Chrissie Hynde  which blows the track into a sky-rocketing crescendo where the driving musical skills of the band which included Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols, Mick Jones of the Clash, the Walbourne Brothers and Johnny Depp’s guitar solo come into their own!

Panik loves this track and, go on, it’s for charity – In fact, it’s a great track for charity, much better than that weak stuff from Mr. ITV himself Simon Cowell!  Listen to some real Rock and Roll giants!

I Put A Spell On You is out for on the 8th of March but pre orders are available here.

FM Belfast – Icelandic Synth Pop comes to London

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Formed in Reykjavik in 2005, we discovered FM Belfast on our last trip to the 2008 edition of Iceland Airwaves.  Playing the headline slot of the Saturday night on home turf, the anticipation buzzing round the city residents provided but a  hint of what was to come.

The credit crunch had just hit the country hard, financial institutions were going bankrupt and the currency was in freefall but the band swept that all aside, tearing the cloaks of cynicism off the shoulders of many a jaded hipster in attendance.  Playing a set that featured their album How to Make Friends and incorporating their famous take on RATM and Technotronic, if joy had a physical manifestation, this was it.

Currently on a European Tour, FM Belfast bring their synth pop sound (but more importantly their show) to our backyard on March 2nd and headline their first London gig at Hoxton Bar and Grill.  And if their music wasn’t enough already, they are also giving away a trip to Iceland for two including flights and accomodation!  You could say they’ve come to our shores too late to capitalise on the 80’s revival but if you think Pop should have more optimism and wit than the androgynous saccharine of La Roux, this is the gig for you.

C*L*A*S*H – Mr. Casual Customer Mixtape

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

NOW! That’s What I Call C*L*A*S*H Vol #1 was sent to us by the finalist in the recent Panik collaboration night, C*L*A*S*H (pictures here).  Mr. Casual Customer crafted some of his own mash ups that proved to be controversial!   Panik can only say that they were made by his own fair hand and there were no rules restricting that!  The next C*L*A*S*H will be held in April – drop us a mail to enter a team

The mix features the mash ups Mr CC made especially for the event.  On the day he only armed himself with nine mash up tracks (only just enough to see him through to the final), which we think was especially brave as most teams on the night brought an MP3 player jam packed with choons!

Listen and enjoy below

C*L*A*S*H – A Night Out With a Difference!

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
We can’t be the only ones who have shaken our heads and covered our ears at a poor selector, or heard a great track and known exactly what we want to hear next.  Inspired by the soundclash battle format, Panik presents CLASH.
Eight teams go head to head in our first event where the people have the power to decide who goes through to the next round.  The contest is not about technical ability — our champion will have to win the affections of the crowd with their music selection rather than mixing skills.
Hosted by our man Big Rich at the Kings Cross Social Club the competition is being held on Thursday 18th Feb 2010.  The rules are simple: MP3 players only, 2 minutes per tune and musically, anything goes (whatever floats your boat!).
Lining up for the event are Crash Bleep Bang, Slutty Fringe, So Damn Fresh, Pillars of the Community, Hannah & the Harpies, The I Team,  Mr. Casual Customer & Team Discovery Channel and RCK – come down and be part of picking the winner!

Diffrent Beats label – EXCLUSIVE!!

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

diffrent print crop

Yes yes yes!!!!  The time is now upon us.  Finally, something a bit Diffrent.  Diffrent is a new digital label from a bunch of guys who were disillusioned with where the drum and the bass was going.  So like everyone who feels like that they decided to start their own label!

They and their artists have got backing from some of the big boys in the business including: Nerm, Grooverider, Fabio, London Elektricity, Lynx, Randomer, Loxy, Sabre, Data, Ulterior Motive, Bailey, Anile, Crissy Criss.

Label talent includes: Cuelock, Joe Syntax, Hunchbak & Tightrope

The sounds about this label are getting big, expect many good things from them.  They are taking the DnB, Dubstep and Minimalist scene by the scruff of the neck and dealing with it.  Diffrent hasn’t gone to press yet and Panik have been privelaged enough to get the exclusive heads up from insiders before the official launch of the label.

You’re not gonna hear any of the finished articles anywhere yet, BUT you can hear this Diffrent inspired podcast on Soundcloud under the title DJ Billion & MC Sense D&B Minimal Podcast Jan 29th

Have a listen and see what you think – Giraffe-Cast will be done this weekend, that’ll be online in the week, masters for 001 release are back – there is a scheduled release date which is yet to be finalised…

you can get to Diffrent on: Facebook, Soundcloud, Myspace and Twitter

David Bowie at the Races – Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

david bowie at the races

Friends of Panik Mike H and Mike P have got together more through indecision than collaboration to bring what sounds to be a great night of fun and frolics at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club.
Taking Mike H’s love of the 1984 Diamond Dogs album by David Bowie as their inspiration and Mike P’s love of ‘the dogs’ (races that is!), they have decided to incorporate the two – culminating in David Bowie at the Races.

With what promises to be night of good music, gambling, CHEAP booze, dressing up like Bowie or a race punter and much hi-jinx!  Including:

David Bowie Cabaret

**The Man Who Sold the World (to pay off his Ladbrokes Account)**

**An unlicensed Deutschmark bookmaker**

**The Midnight Diamond Dogs Sweepstakes**

**Prizes!!**

**TOP DJ’s PLAYING**

Bowie, Rock N Roll, disco classics, Northern Soul, a bit of what you fancy, MODERN.

Plus all the usual Working Men’s Club dancey fun.

It kicks off at 8pm on Saturday the 30th of January.

Dres code: Get on your platforms, lycra and face paint or don a flat cap, sheepskin and a dog on a leash – why not combine the two?!

For such inspired frivolities there has to be a cover charge which will go to CHARITY, £5 on the door (if you are on the guest list), else £7 / £8; all money to go to a good cause (Mike H’s election campaign/Haiti DEC appeal/Labour Friends of Iraq).

Panik gives this a massive 8/10 and we ain’t even been yet!!

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Firstly, Happy New Year from Panik!

For all you people of eclectic tastes there’s a treat for you.  A tour de force of young upcoming British talent cris-crossing genres and styles, hopefully making for a beautiful amalgamation of diverse sounds.  Named BACK OFF at Proud, Camden on the 6th of Jan (tix £5).  Panik is looking forward to this one!

The night includes live music from AKAYZIA, a band with urban folk stylings, well worth a look.  Other acts confirmed include Depot, who describe themselves as “Depot sound like a mix of classic 2 tone British ska with modern indie twinges”.  Others include the interesting Rotten Hill Gang, who have been seen performing at Notting Hill Carnival with the legendary Mick Jones.  (By the way we know you see a nipple from the audience at around 27secs before you all write in!)

The night will also feature live hip hop from Lewis Parker, a very diverse individual indeed.  Critically acclaimed and incredibly talented as a performer and a producer with several singles EPs and albums to his name.  And a live set from NA and Haka young upcoming UK hip hop artists.

All to be rounded off by DJ sets from Harry Love, Eniz and Benson aka b- killah cash slim.  Quote from the promoters (Polarize and Orion Treize) “DJs will be mixing into the night to bring guests a musical experience displaying the best from every genre (no dowy ones included).”  Flyer down low guys and girls….  Panik will be there! x
