Join Index on Censorship, the UK’s leading freedom of expression organisation, and the Belarus Free Theatre at the Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club, for a packed night of cabaret, comedy from Sony award short listed Miriam Elia and The Fix – and all-night mischief. Come and see a mischievous mix of Belarusian funk DJs, live music, cabaret and comedians – all for the exceptionally brave people who dare to speak up, and challenge Belarus’s dictator Lukashenko.

The multi-award winning Belarus Free Theatre, banned in their native Belarus, is renowned for staging underground and uncensored performances that draw attention to the continuing problems faced by Belarusians in “Europe’s last dictatorship”. Their recent performances, including at the Soho Theatre, London and the Under the Radar Festival, New York, have won widespread acclaim. On July 13 the troop performed a rendition of ‘Numbers’ in an event hosted by Index on Censorship and presented by Tom Stoppard at the Free Word Centre in London.

The registration for new teams is now open, and the July edition of the championship will see us moving into a bigger space for the summer.  No DJ ability is required, just good tune selection.

In keeping with British political tradition, we have claimed an old idea and spun it as our own – the soundclash.

Our manifesto is simple: 8 teams battle head to head, playing their best tunes each round to musically outfox each other. Making progress to the next stage depends on winning the support of the crowd who decide who gets knocked out. The winner takes the prize and the glory!

Musically, any genre goes. The emphasis of the night is for the audience to get involved and decide the outcome. Teams are positively encouraged to bring a secret weapon to the battle and throw down a guilty pleasure or personalised tune.

Once again, Big Rich will be hosting the night with DJs warming the crowd up and playing between the heats. Can current champions The I Team retain their crown?

There’s still a few spaces for new teams so drop us a mail if you fancy stepping up and demonstrating the quality of your tune selection. DJ ability is not required!

Public View is based on the simple idea of staging art exhibitions on the street and the 20th of March 2010 saw their first exhibition opening. The exhibition is taking place in Brighton and sees five photographs displayed in as many locations across the city. The images are of nearby windows that have been photographed, printed and pasted up near the original real window. Panik thinks it’s a really clever idea; a subtle intervention into daily life but one that allows the everyday world around us to be seen slightly differently.
We don’t know when the exhibition ends as the organisers don’t either – as long as the council allows them we guess. You can keep and eye on the progress of the work by checking out their website here, which has more information, mailing list, images of the work and a free guide to the exhibition.  A Public View was also realised through the help of Second Draft, who are small design team specialising in website design and maintenance, with an interest in helping people in the creative arts.

Following the success of previous nights by the Slutty Fringe boys (and girl), they will be showcasing talent, Shock Defeat and :Kinema: (who have just been featured by the Guardian) from their in-house label Hot Pockets.

this looks to be another great night in a great place from messrs and ms Slutty Fringe.

Save You Records is the new home for those deep, techy and “ooooo, let me hear that one more time” house and techno tracks that save us from the repetitive and mundane.  Save You Records is all about having an open and honest platform for emerging and established artists to distribute music that is true to them and us.  Music to Save You is our mantra.

What the flyer doesn’t say is that the label are installing a Funktion One soundsystem in the venue especially for this event!  See you there.

The Cardiff based arts collective ‘Peaceful Progress’ have transformed an old Boiler House into Wales’ first dedicated Graffiti and Street Art Gallery. The Boiler House includes a large indoor graffiti gallery space, over 100ft of outdoor wall space, a shop and a studio. This innovative project provides a legitimate space for graffiti artists to reach a wider audience and showcases Graffiti art as a positive and sustainable art-form. Through workshops with Schools and Community Centres the Boiler House will inspire young people to get creative, and will be especially good at engaging with hard to reach groups of young people.

The Boiler House will hold monthly exhibitions featuring the best of local and national Graffiti artists. The independent shop is open to the public and stocks original and affordable canvas work by graffiti artists based in South Wales. The grand opening is on the 27th February, from 12pm – 10pm, come down and experience counter culture at its best.

Peaceful Progress was founded by Graffiti artist Bryce Davies in 2000, and now represents a number of artists and performers based in South Wales. Peaceful Progress were responsible for the Fair Play festival held in Canton in 2008/2009 which raised over £1000 for War on Want (08) and the The SAFE Foundation (09). Currently Peaceful Progress run the monthly ‘Dub in the Pub’ nights at the Lansdowne Pub and the group tour the festival circuit throughout the summer with the Peaceful Progress Graffiti Tent. The Boiler House is a community based project to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together through Graffiti art.

The credit crunch had just hit the country hard, financial institutions were going bankrupt and the currency was in freefall but the band swept that all aside, tearing the cloaks of cynicism off the shoulders of many a jaded hipster in attendance.  Playing a set that featured their album How to Make Friends and incorporating their famous take on RATM and Technotronic, if joy had a physical manifestation, this was it.

Currently on a European Tour, FM Belfast bring their synth pop sound (but more importantly their show) to our backyard on March 2nd and headline their first London gig at Hoxton Bar and Grill.  And if their music wasn’t enough already, they are also giving away a trip to Iceland for two including flights and accomodation!  You could say they’ve come to our shores too late to capitalise on the 80’s revival but if you think Pop should have more optimism and wit than the androgynous saccharine of La Roux, this is the gig for you.
