Pieterjan Grandry is a post graduate student in Visual Arts at St. Lucas School of Arts in Antwerp, Belgium and he’s organising this competition as part of a Masters project. What an inspired idea!

Having seen the cathedral in Antwerp on our travels, we can see why Pieterjan came up with this project; the design goes against the standard design for a religious building of its type i.e. they only built it with one tower than the usual two. We were intrigued by the project when we first saw it and decided to get in touch with Pieterjan and this is what he said…

“This may sound a bit strange – what has art got to do with architectural competitions? But it’s a way to organise an international brainstorm. To make everyone think about the concept ‘absence’. These international ideas will be put together in a book and in a series of exhibitions. These function again as a source of inspiration.”

Panik came across Guerrilla Lighting through a friend of the site. They seem to have been doing what one can only describe as lighting ‘flash mobs’. They have had events in Northern Ireland to Turkey and loads of places in between.

GL bring into public focus the misuse of lighting on certain buildings whilst highlighting those that need some kind of strategic lighting.

Their basic ethos seems to be:

not all buildings need or deserve to be lit – strategic lighting plans should exist for all cities

architectural lighting is not a competition – brighter is not better

poorly designed and installed lighting should be prevented – cities should establish and enforce a minimum standard of quality

all wasteful use of light should be prevent – leaving the lights on all night in large glazed offices should be a criminal offence

If you visit their site or go to their Facebook group you can see upcoming events and past ones too. Panik gives this a thumbs up – Besides it is surely about time we had some architecture up in here!
